Dr Andrew Forrest Opens Nor-Shipping 2025 with Focus on Sustainable Maritime Future

Nor-Shipping 2025 officially opened with Dr. Andrew Forrest ringing the bell at Euronext Oslo Børs, marking the start of a week dedicated to shaping the future of the global maritime industry.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, Nor-Shipping 2025 brought together industry leaders from around the world to explore strategies for advancing ambitious climate goals within a rapidly evolving ocean sector.

At the heart of the conference was a clear message: understanding the complex challenges facing the maritime industry is crucial, but collaboration is even more critical. Rules above the waves mean little if we ignore what lies beneath them.

Dr Andrew Forrest AO laid out how ocean protection and industrial decarbonisation must go hand in hand. He emphasised that protecting 30 percent of the world’s oceans is not just an environmental imperative but a strategic investment. These conservation efforts could increase fish stocks by up to 45 times, ensuring food security and economic prosperity for future generations.

In parallel, the shift toward zero-emissions shipping offers significant economic benefits. The Green Pioneer — Fortescue's groundbreaking zero-emissions vessel — is proof that sustainable maritime transport is achievable today. Scaling these technologies, he argued, will open new markets and strengthen global supply chains.
