PIT BOOST in action
- Fortescue Zero returns as the official PIT BOOST provider for Season 12, bringing ultra-fast technology, enhanced race strategy and added spectacle to the all-electric racing series.
- The innovative technology will be featured at all double-header weekends, starting with Round 4 in Jeddah. The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will also implement PIT BOOST in Berlin, Monaco, Shanghai, and Tokyo, as well as the season finale in London.
- The rapid booster system allows for two battery top-ups per race from a 600kW portable unit and supported by Fortescue Zero’s battery intelligence software Elysia, that optimises charging while preserving battery life and integrity.
Fortescue Zero has today announced it will return as official PIT BOOST provider of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship for Season 12, bringing ultra-fast technology, enhanced race strategy and added spectacle to the all-electric racing series for 2026.
Following the successful debut of PIT BOOST in Season 11, Fortescue Zero’s innovative technology will again be featured in the first race of all ‘double-header' weekends. Starting with Jeddah this Friday, February 13, teams will also implement their PIT BOOST strategies in Berlin, Monaco, Shanghai, Tokyo as well as the season finale in London.
Races equipped with PIT BOOST will also consolidate ATTACK MODE into one 6-minute window, forcing teams into high-pressure strategic decisions that promise more excitement for the fans.
This rapid and efficient booster system delivers teams the ability for two battery top-ups per race from a 600kW portable unit, not constrained by grid connection. The system is enhanced by Fortescue Zero’s battery intelligence software, Elysia, which allows for the optimisation of speed, while also preserving battery life and integrity.
In Season 11, PIT BOOST delivered over 1.5MWh of energy across almost 400 battery top-ups conducted across different races, sessions and tests.
Fortescue’s General Manager Motorsport Douglas Campling said, “Fortescue Zero’s PIT BOOST ultra-fast technology is returning for a second season, to once again deliver a valuable strategic edge to the race series.”
“The impressive results we achieved last season demonstrate how innovation can continue to take motorsports to a new level. PIT BOOST shows how we can push the limits of what batteries, their infrastructure and intelligence systems can do in a safe, exciting and competitive way.”
Formula E Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo, said, “The return of PIT BOOST this season reaffirms Formula E’s role as the ultimate real-world laboratory for high-speed innovation. By pushing this technology to its limits on the track, we aren’t just enhancing the race spectacle; we are proving the mission-critical solutions needed to decarbonise heavy industry and accelerate the global shift to electric mobility.”
Fortescue Zero brings more than 15 years of motorsport and racing heritage to designing, testing and perfecting breakthrough technologies such as PIT BOOST for the Formula E World Championship and other elite series. Innovations proven under the extreme demands of the racetrack are now being adapted for real-world industrial applications, including across Fortescue’s Australian mine sites, supporting the company’s mission to decarbonise its operations by 2030.
Fortescue Growth and Energy CEO Gus Pichot said, “The technology we have demonstrated and proven on the racetrack is now being scaled to help accelerate Fortescue’s journey to Real Zero across our Pilbara mine sites and beyond.”
“Formula E pushes technology to perform under extreme pressure - and that's exactly where Fortescue Zero operates best.”
WHAT IS PIT BOOST?
PIT BOOST is an innovative mid-race feature that provides a 10% energy increase (3.85kWh) to race cars through a 30-second, 600kW rapid energy boost in the pitlane. This mandatory sporting feature - deploying significantly more power than current consumer superchargers - adds another strategic element during selected races, with the potential to dramatically alter race outcomes and tactics.
- Independent of existing ATTACK MODE rules, providing teams with two strategic elements to manage alongside one another.
- No more than two Pit Crew may work on the car during the PIT BOOST, plus one Pit Crew member assigned specifically to stop and release the car.
- Only one car at a time per team may carry out PIT BOOST (not simultaneously).
- Highlights rapid-charging EV technology, reflecting Formula E’s race-to-road ingenuity.
- The FIA will determine the window to take PIT BOOST (depending on a certain ‘Status of Charge’ value), which will be shared with teams 21 days before each race.
This ultra-fast charging technology is currently being utilised to accelerate the journey beyond the track. Specifically, the same engineering principles powering Season 12 are being deployed at Fortescue’s Australian mine sites in the Pilbara to decarbonise heavy operations by 2030, proving that future zero-emission technology starts on the Formula E grid.
