The future is green metal
At Christmas Creek, we're helping develop the next generation of ironmaking.
The Green Metal Project is a major step toward producing lower-emissions iron and building a future beyond coal-based ironmaking.
Replacing coal in ironmaking
Steel accounts for around 8% of global energy system emissions, with ironmaking responsible for most of that.
Traditional ironmaking relies on coal to remove oxygen from iron ore. Reducing reliance on coal-based reduction is critical to lowering emissions, and we're investing in technologies that can help make that possible.
By developing the facility within our existing mining operations, we're testing new process technology in a real industrial environment.
Building the pathway to green iron
Located at Christmas Creek in the Pilbara, the Green Metal Project brings together the key elements needed to advance green iron production.
By combining ore, renewable energy, infrastructure and industrial capability in one location, we're creating a real-world environment to test and advance lower-emissions ironmaking technologies.
